Step by step

The question

Question: find the population standard deviation of 3, 3, 4, 6 and 9.

Population SD of 3, 3, 4, 6, 9

The standard deviation, SD, tells how far the numbers usually are from the mean.

SD = how far the numbers usually are from the mean

1 Find the mean

First the mean: add them all, then divide by how many.

The total is 25.

25 divided by 5 is 5.

mean = 3 + 3 + 4 + 6 + 95 = 255 = 5

2 Distances from the mean

A table: how far each number is from the mean.

3 minus 5 is −2.

Negative: 3 is below the mean.

3 minus 5 is −2.

And the same for the rest.

6 minus 5 is 1.

Above the mean.

Look: the distances add up to 0.

The ones below the mean cancel the ones above.

−2 − 2 − 1 + 1 + 4 = 0

Careful!

Adding the distances always gives 0.

So we square them first.

Squares are never negative.

Careful: the distances always add to 0: square them first

3 Square them

A new column: each distance squared.

−2 squared is −2 times −2.

Negative times negative is positive: 4.

And the rest.

4 Add the squares

We add the squares: 4 plus 4 plus 1 plus 1 plus 16 is 26.

4 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 16 = 26

5 Divide

These numbers are the whole group, a population.

So we divide by how many there are.

population: ÷ n

26 divided by 5 is 5.2.

This is the variance.

variance = 265 = 5.2

6 Square root

The variance is in squared units.

The square root brings it back.

The square root of 5.2 is 2.2804 and more digits.

SD = √5.2 = 2.2804…

The books round to one more decimal place than the data.

So the SD is about 2.3.

SD ≈ 2.3
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

So the numbers are usually about 2.3 away from the mean, 5.

the numbers are about 2.3 from the mean 5

7 Check

Let's check: 2.3 squared is 5.29.

That is about the variance, 5.2.

So it is right!

2.32 = 5.29 ≈ 5.2

Let's look back.

First: find the mean.

Then: distances from the mean.

Then: square them.

Then: add the squares.

Then: divide.

Then: square root.

Last: check.

Answer
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data
