Step by step

The question

Question: find the sample standard deviation of 48, 52, 50, 46 and 54.

Sample SD of 48, 52, 50, 46, 54

The standard deviation, SD, tells how far the numbers usually are from the mean.

SD = how far the numbers usually are from the mean

1 Find the mean

First the mean: add them all, then divide by how many.

The total is 250.

250 divided by 5 is 50.

mean = 48 + 52 + 50 + 46 + 545 = 2505 = 50

2 Distances from the mean

A table: how far each number is from the mean.

48 minus 50 is −2.

Negative: 48 is below the mean.

52 minus 50 is 2.

Above the mean.

And the same for the rest.

Look: the distances add up to 0.

The ones below the mean cancel the ones above.

−2 + 2 + 0 − 4 + 4 = 0

3 Square them

A new column: each distance squared.

−2 squared is −2 times −2.

Negative times negative is positive: 4.

And the rest.

4 Add the squares

We add the squares: 4 plus 4 plus 0 plus 16 plus 16 is 40.

4 + 4 + 0 + 16 + 16 = 40

5 Divide

These numbers are a sample: only part of the whole group.

For a sample we divide by one less than how many, n minus 1.

sample: ÷ (n − 1)

There are 5 numbers, so we divide by 5 minus 1, which is 4.

40 divided by 4 is 10.

variance = 405 − 1 = 404 = 10

Careful!

For a sample we divide by 4, not by 5.

Careful: not ÷ 5 ✗

6 Square root

The variance is in squared units.

The square root brings it back.

The square root of 10 is 3.1623 and more digits.

SD = √10 = 3.1623…

The books round to one more decimal place than the data.

So the SD is about 3.2.

SD ≈ 3.2
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

So the numbers are usually about 3.2 away from the mean, 50.

the numbers are about 3.2 from the mean 50

7 Check

Let's check: 3.2 squared is 10.24.

That is about the variance, 10.

So it is right!

3.22 = 10.24 ≈ 10

Let's look back.

First: find the mean.

Then: distances from the mean.

Then: square them.

Then: add the squares.

Then: divide.

Then: square root.

Last: check.

Answer
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:
