Step by step

The question

Question: simplify (2x²y)(3xy³).

Brackets next to each other mean times.

(2x2y)(3xy3)

1 Numbers with numbers

In times, the order does not matter.

So numbers go with numbers, and each letter goes with the same letter.

order does not matter: ab = ba

We put them in groups.

= (2 × 3)(x2 x)(y y3)

2 Count the letters

A power tells how many times the letter is multiplied.

x² is 2 x's.

x is 1 x.

Together that is 3 x's.

x2 x = (xx)(x) = x3
y y3 = (y)(yyy) = y4

So the rule is: same letter, times, add the powers.

2 plus 1 is 3.

For y: 1 plus 3 is 4.

2 + 1 = 3
y: 1 + 3 = 4
xa xb = xa + b

2 times 3 is 6.

So we get 6x³y⁴.

= 6x3y4

Let's look back.

First: numbers with numbers.

Last: count the letters.

Answer
= 6x3y4

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Simplify (2x2y)(4xy3)
Show the answer
8x3y4
