Step by step

The question

Question: solve 5n = 35.

5n = 35

1 Remove the 5

5n means 5 times n.

We want just n.

To remove times 5, we divide by 5.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

5n5 = 355

5 divided by 5 is 1.

So just n is left.

35 divided by 5 is 7.

355 = 7

So n = 7!

n = 7

2 Check

Let's check: put 7 in place of n.

Check: 5(7) = 35

We get 35, the same as the right side.

So n = 7 is right!

Let's look back.

First: remove the 5.

Last: check.

Answer
n = 7

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Solve 3n = 33
Show the answer
n = 11
