Step by step

The question

Question: what can the third side be, if a triangle has sides 4 and 10?

sides 4 and 10, third side = ?

In a triangle, any two sides together are longer than the third side.

any two sides together
are longer than the third

1 Longest it can be

The third side must be shorter than 4 plus 10, which is 14.

Else the two sides cannot reach round it.

= third < 4 + 10 = 14

2 Shortest it can be

And the third side plus 4 must be longer than 10.

So it must be longer than 10 minus 4: 6.

= third > 10 − 4 = 6

Careful!

The third side can be the longest side.

It only has to be shorter than 14.

Careful: not third < 10 ✗

So the third side is between 6 and 14, but not 6 or 14 itself.

= 6 < third side < 14

3 Check

Let's check with a third side of 11, between 6 and 14: 4 plus 10 is 14, more than 11.

4 plus 11 is 15, more than 10.

A triangle works.

So the answer is right!

11: 4 + 10 = 14 > 11, 4 + 11 = 15 > 10

Let's look back.

First: longest it can be.

Then: shortest it can be.

Last: check.

Answer
= 6 < third side < 14

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

sides 2 and 12, third side = ?
Show the answer
10 < third side < 14
