The question

Question: work out 2/3 + 1/4.

23 + 14

1 Make the bottoms the same

The bottom numbers are 3 and 4.

The bottom tells the size of the pieces.

These pieces are different sizes, so we can't add the tops yet.

We need one bottom number that works for both.

13 and 14: different sizes

We count up in 3s and 4s.

In 3s: 3, 6, 9, 12.

In 4s: 4, 8, 12.

12 is the first number in both lists.

So 12 works for both.

12 will be the new bottom.

In 3s: 3, 6, 9, 12
In 4s: 4, 8, 12

To make 3 into 12, we multiply by 4: 3 × 4 = 12.

3 × 4 = 12

To make 4 into 12, we multiply by 3: 4 × 3 = 12.

4 × 3 = 12

We multiply the bottom by 4: 3 × 4.

We did it to the bottom, so we must do it to the top too: 2 × 4.

We multiply the bottom by 3: 4 × 3.

We did it to the bottom, so we must do it to the top too: 1 × 3.

Top and bottom times the same number: the fraction keeps its size.

= 2 × 43 × 4 + 1 × 34 × 3

2 × 4 is 8.

3 × 4 is 12.

1 × 3 is 3.

4 × 3 is 12.

Now both have 12 at the bottom.

= 812 + 312

2 Add the tops

The bottoms are the same, so the pieces are the same size.

We add the tops: 8 + 3.

The bottom stays 12, because the size of the pieces does not change.

= 8 + 312

8 + 3 is 11.

The bottom stays 12.

= 1112

Can we make it simpler?

We list the numbers that go into each.

Into 11: 1, 11.

Into 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12.

Only 1 is in both lists.

So it stays like this.

Into 11: 1, 11
Into 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
simplest ✓

So the answer is 11/12.

Let's look back.

First: make the bottoms the same.

Last: add the tops.

Answer
= 1112
