Write 2x^2 - 4x in vertex form

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Vertex form by completing the square · Algebra 2

Step by step

The question

Question: write y = 2x² − 4x in vertex form.

y = 2x2 − 4x

Vertex form is a times (x minus h) squared, plus k.

The vertex, the turning point, is (h, k).

vertex form: a(x − h)2 + k

1 Take 2 out of the x parts

The x² must have just 1 in front.

So we take 2 out of the two x parts.

The 0 stays outside.

2x² ÷ 2 = x², −4x ÷ 2 = −2x

So y is 2 times (x² − 2x).

= 2(x2 − 2x) + 0

2 Complete the square

We add 1 to fill the corner.

And we take 1 away straight after, so nothing changes.

= 2(x2 − 2x + 1 − 1) + 0

3 Write the square

The full square is x − 1 on each side.

So these three parts are (x − 1) squared.

x2 − 2x + 1 = (x − 1)2

We write the bracket squared.

The rest stays.

= 2[(x − 1)2 − 1] + 0

2 times minus 1 is −2: the 2 multiplies both parts in the big bracket.

2 × (−1) = −2

So y is 2 times the square, minus 2.

= 2(x − 1)2 − 2 + 0

4 Tidy up

So y = 2(x − 1)² − 2.

This is vertex form.

= 2(x − 1)2 − 2

5 Read the vertex

In vertex form we need x minus h.

x − 1 is x minus 1.

So h = 1, and k = −2.

x − 1 = x − 1

So the vertex is (1, −2).

vertex = (1, −2)

Careful!

x minus 1 means h is 1, not −1.

The sign in the bracket is the opposite of h.

Careful: not vertex (−1, −2) ✗

6 Check

Let's check: open the brackets again.

(x − 1) squared is x² − 2x + 1.

Check: 2(x − 1)2 − 2 = 2(x2 − 2x + 1) − 2
= 2x2 − 4x + 2 − 2 = 2x2 − 4x

We get 2x² − 4x again.

It works!

Let's look back.

First: take 2 out of the x parts.

Then: complete the square.

Then: write the square.

Then: tidy up.

Then: read the vertex.

Last: check.

Answer
= 2(x − 1)2 − 2

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

y = 2x2 − 8x in vertex form
Show the answer
y = 2(x − 2)2 − 8
