z = 5xy + x^2, x = t^2, y = 3t, find dz/dt

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Chain rule with several variables · Calculus 3

Step by step

The question

Question: find dz/dt when z = 5xy + x², x = t² and y = 3t.

z = 5xy + x2, x = t², y = 3t

1 Draw the tree

Draw a tree.

z depends on x and y.

Each of them depends on t.

Each branch has its own slope.

To go from z down to t, there are two paths.

Multiply along each path, then add the paths.

2 The pieces

Term by term.

In 5xy, 5y is fixed and waits in front.

x gives 1.

So 5y.

x²: the power 2 comes down.

The power goes down by 1.

So 2x.

So ∂z/∂x = 5y + 2x.

∂z∂x = 5y + 2x

Term by term.

In 5xy, 5x is fixed and waits in front.

y gives 1.

So 5x.

x² has no y: it is a fixed number, so it gives 0.

∂z∂y = 5x + 0

Drop the zeros: ∂z/∂y = 5x.

∂z∂y = 5x

x = t², so dx/dt = 2t.

dxdt = 2t

y = 3t, so dy/dt = 3.

dydt = 3

3 Use the chain rule

The chain rule: the x path plus the y path.

dzdt = ∂z∂x × dxdt + ∂z∂y × dydt

Put the four pieces in.

dzdt = (5y + 2x) × (2t) + (5x) × (3)

Careful!

Many people use only one path.

z changes through x and through y, so both paths count.

Careful: two paths: add them

4 Write it in t

The answer should be in t only.

So put x = t² and y = 3t in.

x = t², y = 3t

Each x becomes t² and each y becomes 3t.

dzdt = 5(3t) × (2t) + 2(t2) × (2t) + 5(t2) × (3)

Multiply each part out: numbers with numbers, and add the powers of t.

dzdt = 30t2 + 4t3 + 15t2

Add the like terms: dz/dt = 45t² + 4t³.

dzdt = 45t2 + 4t3

5 Check

Let's check another way.

Put x and y in first: z = 15t³ + t⁴.

z = 15t³ + t⁴

Its derivative is 45t² + 4t³.

The same answer.

Right!

dzdt = 45t² + 4t³

Let's look back.

First: draw the tree.

Then: the pieces.

Then: use the chain rule.

Then: write it in t.

Last: check.

Answer
dzdt = 45t2 + 4t3

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Find z = 3xy + 4x2, x = 2t², y = 3t
Show the answer
dzdt = 54t² + 64t³
