z = x^2 + 4y, x = t^3, y = t^2, find dz/dt

Step by step

The question

Question: find dz/dt when z = x² + 4y, x = t³ and y = t².

z = x2 + 4y, x = t³, y = t²

1 Draw the tree

Draw a tree.

z depends on x and y.

Each of them depends on t.

Each branch has its own slope.

To go from z down to t, there are two paths.

Multiply along each path, then add the paths.

2 The pieces

Term by term.

x²: the power 2 comes down.

The power goes down by 1.

So 2x.

4y has no x: it is a fixed number, so it gives 0.

∂z∂x = 2x + 0

Drop the zeros: ∂z/∂x = 2x.

∂z∂x = 2x

Term by term.

x² has no y: it is a fixed number, so it gives 0.

4y gives 4.

∂z∂y = 0 + 4

Drop the zeros: ∂z/∂y = 4.

∂z∂y = 4

x = t³, so dx/dt = 3t².

dxdt = 3t2

y = t², so dy/dt = 2t.

dydt = 2t

3 Use the chain rule

The chain rule: the x path plus the y path.

dzdt = ∂z∂x × dxdt + ∂z∂y × dydt

Put the four pieces in.

dzdt = (2x) × (3t2) + (4) × (2t)

Careful!

Many people use only one path.

z changes through x and through y, so both paths count.

Careful: two paths: add them

4 Write it in t

The answer should be in t only.

So put x = t³ and y = t² in.

x = t³, y = t²

Each x becomes t³ and each y becomes t².

dzdt = 2(t3) × (3t2) + 4 × (2t)

Multiply each part out: numbers with numbers, and add the powers of t.

So dz/dt = 6t⁵ + 8t.

dzdt = 6t5 + 8t

5 Check

Let's check another way.

Put x and y in first: z = t⁶ + 4t².

z = t⁶ + 4t²

Its derivative is 6t⁵ + 8t.

The same answer.

Right!

dzdt = 6t⁵ + 8t

Let's look back.

First: draw the tree.

Then: the pieces.

Then: use the chain rule.

Then: write it in t.

Last: check.

Answer
dzdt = 6t5 + 8t

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Find z = x2 + 2y, x = t³, y = 3t²
Show the answer
dzdt = 6t⁵ + 12t
