Step by step

The question

Question: find the diagonal of a box 7 by 24 by 10.

box 7 by 24 by 10

The diagonal goes from a bottom corner to the top corner on the other side, right through the box.

1 Floor diagonal

First the floor.

Its diagonal d makes a right triangle with the sides 7 and 24.

Pythagoras: d squared is 7 squared plus 24 squared.

7 times 7 is 49.

24 times 24 is 576.

Together 625.

d2 = 72 + 242 = 49 + 576 = 625
a² + b² = c²

25 times 25 is 625.

So d is 25.

d = √625 = 25

Careful!

We cannot just add the sides.

A diagonal is a short cut: Pythagoras, twice.

Careful: not 7 + 24 + 10 = 41 ✗

2 Diagonal of the box

Now a new right triangle stands up: the floor diagonal d, the height 10, and the diagonal D of the box.

Pythagoras again: D squared is d squared plus 10 squared.

d squared is 625.

10 times 10 is 100.

Together 725.

D2 = d2 + 102 = 625 + 100 = 725

725 is not a square number.

A calculator gives 26.926, and so on.

D = √725 = 26.926…

To the nearest tenth, D is about 26.9.

D ≈ 26.9

3 Check

Let's check: the two steps are the same as l squared plus w squared plus h squared.

49 plus 576 plus 100 is 725, the same D squared.

So the answer is right!

7² + 24² + 10² = 49 + 576 + 100 = 725

Let's look back.

First: floor diagonal.

Then: diagonal of the box.

Last: check.

Answer
D ≈ 26.9
