Step by step

The question

Question: find the perimeter of a parallelogram with sides 6.5 m and 4 m.

1 Find every side

The perimeter is the way all around the edge.

We add every side.

A parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides.

It looks like a rectangle pushed over.

Its opposite sides are the same length.

So the top is the same as the bottom: 6.5 m.

The right side is the same as the left: 4 m.

2 Add all the sides

Walk around and add: 6.5 + 4 + 6.5 + 4.

P = 6.5 + 4 + 6.5 + 4

6.5 plus 4 is 10.5.

The other two sides make 10.5 too.

P = 10.5 + 10.5

10.5 plus 10.5 is 21.

So the perimeter is 21 m.

P = 21 m

3 Check

Let's check another way: one long side and one short side, then double it.

2 × (6.5 + 4) = 2 × 10.5 = 21

We get 21 again.

So the perimeter is right!

Let's look back.

First: find every side.

Then: add all the sides.

Last: check.

Answer
P = 21 m
