The question

Question: find the volume of a box 6 cm long, 4.5 cm wide and 2 cm high.

1 Length × width × height

Volume is how much space is inside.

We count the 1 by 1 by 1 cubes that fit.

The volume of a box is V = length × width × height.

V = length × width × height

Now put the numbers in: length = 6, width = 4.5 and height = 2.

V = 6 × 4.5 × 2

Forget the points: 6 times 45 is 270.

4.5 is 45 tenths.

So the answer is 270 tenths.

That is 1 digit after the point: 27.0, which is 27.

6 × 45 = 270
1 digit after the point → 27.0

The bottom layer is 6 cubes by 4.5 cubes.

That is one layer of 27 cubes.

There are 2 layers.

So V = 27 × 2.

V = 27 × 2

27 times 2 is 54.

We count cubes, so the unit is cm³.

So the volume is 54 cm³.

V = 54 cm3
Answer
V = 54 cm3

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

Find the volume of a box 10 cm long, 4.2 cm wide and 2 cm high.
Show the answer
V = 84 cm3
