The question

Question: find the factors of 28.

Factors of 28

A factor of 28 is a whole number that goes into 28 exactly.

Nothing is left over.

factor: goes into 28 exactly

1 Find the factor pairs

We start with 1.

1 goes into every number: 1 times 28 is 28.

Each number that goes in comes with a partner.

1 × 28 = 28

28 divided by 2 is 14.

Nothing is left over.

So 2 times 14 is 28.

2 × 14 = 28

Does 3 go in?

28 divided by 3 is 9, with 1 left over.

So 3 is not a factor.

28 ÷ 3 = 9 r 1 ✗

The r means left over.

r 1 = 1 left over

28 divided by 4 is 7.

Nothing is left over.

So 4 times 7 is 28.

4 × 7 = 28

Does 5 go in?

28 divided by 5 is 5, with 3 left over.

So 5 is not a factor.

28 ÷ 5 = 5 r 3 ✗

Next is 6.

But 6 times 6 is 36, more than 28.

From here the pairs only repeat.

So we stop.

6 × 6 = 36 > 28 → stop

2 List them in order

Now we write them from small to big.

First the orange numbers, going down.

Then the purple numbers, going up.

1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 28

So 28 has 6 factors: 1, 2, 4, 7, 14 and 28.

Let's look back.

First: find the factor pairs.

Last: list them in order.
