Step by step

The question

Question: People were asked: art or music?

9 boys chose art and 6 chose music.

7 girls chose art and 8 chose music.

One of the boys is picked at random.

What is the probability they chose art?

The line means given.

Given one of the boys: we only look at the boys.

P(art | boy) = boys who chose artall boys

P stands for probability.

The line stands for given.

P = probability, | = given

1 Make a table

One row for each group, one column for each answer, and the totals.

9 boys chose art, 6 chose music.

9 plus 6 is 15.

7 girls chose art, 8 chose music.

7 plus 8 is 15.

The totals: 16 chose art, 14 chose music, 30 in all.

2 Keep only the given row

Given boy: only this row counts.

The others do not.

In it: 9 chose art, out of 15.

3 Write the fraction

So the probability is 9/15.

P(art | boy) = 915

Careful!

The bottom is only the boys: 15.

Not all 30.

Careful: not 930 ✗

4 Simplify

Both 9 and 15 can be divided by 3.

That makes it simpler.

P(art | boy) = 9 ÷ 315 ÷ 3

So it is 3/5.

P(art | boy) = 35

5 Check

Let's check with the rule: the probability of both, divided by the probability of boy.

Both: 9 out of all 30.

Boy: 15 out of 30.

P(art | boy) = P(both) ÷ P(boy) = 930 ÷ 1530

Dividing by a fraction: flip it and multiply.

The 30s cancel: 9/15.

The same.

So the answer is right!

= 930 × 3015 = 915 ✓

Let's look back.

First: make a table.

Then: keep only the given row.

Then: write the fraction.

Then: simplify.

Last: check.

Answer
P(art | boy) = 35

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Show the answer
P(art | boy) = 710
