Step by step

The question

Question: find the range of f(x) = 3/(x − 1).

f(x) = 3x − 1

The range is all the y's that can come out.

range = the y's that can come out

1 What a fraction can be

A fraction is 0 only when its top is 0.

Here the top is 3.

So 3/(x − 1) is never 0.

It can be any other number.

a fraction is 0 only when its top is 0
the top is 3: never 0

Careful!

1 is the x that can't go in.

The range is about the y's that come out.

Careful: not range: y ≠ 1 ✗

So 3/(x − 1) ≠ 0.

3x − 1 ≠ 0

The left side is f(x), the y.

So y ≠ 0.

Every y except 0 comes out.

y ≠ 0

2 See it on the graph

Draw the grid.

Here is the graph of f(x) = 3/(x − 1).

And it never touches y = 0: that y never comes out.

3 Check

Let's check.

Any other y can come out: x = 2 gives y = 3.

x = 2: 32 − 1 = 3 = 3

But y = 0 would need 3/(x − 1) = 0, and the top 3 is never 0.

So 0 never comes out.

y = 0: 3x − 1 = 0 never true

Let's look back.

First: what a fraction can be.

Then: see it on the graph.

Last: check.

Answer
y ≠ 0

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

range of f(x) = 3x − 2
Show the answer
range: y ≠ 0
